Autotransfusion

Bloodless Surgery

The benefits of Autotransfusion are widely documented in the medical literature. Numerous randomized, double blind studies have explained and clarified what most people already understood intuitively: The less blood lost in surgery, the better the outcome for the patient.

Studies have also demonstrated that there are other, less obvious benefits. On average, every three units of non-allogenic blood a patient receives during surgery adds one extra day to the hospital stay. This factor alone is enough justification to require that Autotransfusion be available for any procedure that risks significant blood loss.
